Square Foot Garden – June Update

Decided it was time to get the trellis put up. The tomato was getting crooked and the cucumbers started to creep.

Ended up pulling up the kale. Wasn’t eating it and the leaves were so huge, the beets were getting no sun. Live and learn! Also noting that I didn’t clip out as many of the plants as I should have. Much crowding…

Outside of the garden I have planted another of the Mortgage Lifter Heirloom tomato plants, as well as a strawberry plant I ordered from Burpee some time ago. Tomato is growing like gangbusters, but the strawberries are not. It’s not that they’re not growing, it’s that critters are eating the strawberries before they can even get started. 😡

We’ve eaten some of the lettuces, but honestly, the varieties that I have seem a bit bitter. I’ve read somewhere that you have to pick them earlier, but I don’t want to strip the whole plant. Also, my lettuce is getting super tall, so I don’t know what to do about that either….? Any reader suggestions? 🙂
